Chapter Nineteen

Angus sat opposite DCI Spencer in one of the interview rooms. A female police officer came into the room with a coffee in a polystyrene cup and put it in front of Angus. He eyed it, knowing it would be lukewarm. That was deliberate, in case a prisoner decided to throw it over a police officer.

“You’d think that polystyrene cups would have been banned by now as bad for the environment,” Angus found himself saying.

The WPC looked at him as she sat down beside DCI Spencer. “It’s a precaution, sir, to make sure you don’t scald yourself.” Angus knew that too, but he didn’t say anything. The sooner this was over with, the better.

Sitting next to him was his brief, a local lawyer provided free of charge by the government. He’d spoken to Angus alone beforehand, and Angus had the impression that despite his advancing years, the lawyer had no experience with murder cases.

The female officer pressed the record button on the video, then stated the date, the time and who was there.

DCI Spencer leaned forward. “First of all, Mr Darrow, you’re not under arrest, and you can leave at any time. I’d like you to explain in your own words what happened this morning. Start from when you got up.”

Angus raised an eyebrow. He wouldn’t have started with that. He’d have asked about his relationship with the victim, if any. “I got up, left my house at 7.15am, and went to Darren’s house. When I discovered he wasn’t at home, I drove to Lord Farnley’s estate. I saw Darren’s truck parked at the side of the road leading to the house. I parked my car, changed into trainers and went to find him in the woods. I found him dead and I phoned you.” It was factual and all the information he needed.

DCI Spencer took notes as Angus spoke and stopped writing when he’d finished then looked up, his eyes narrowed assessing Angus. “Why did you change your shoes?”

“It was muddy. I didn’t want to get my shoes dirty.”

Angus read the officer’s handwriting upside down. He’d written ‘Dirty shoes’.

“Can you explain why you went to see Darren so early in the morning?”

“He’d called me the day before, saying he had information about who really killed Brian Letterman, and I wanted to talk to him about it.”

DCI Spencer stared at Angus. “What has that murder got to do with you?”

“I’m a private detective. I was hired by Liam Beckett to prove his innocence.”

“And what did Darren tell you?”

“He didn’t. When I visited him last night, he denied ever calling me.”

“You visited him last night?” Spencer leaned forward, a glint in his eye as though he’d caught a fox in the henhouse.

“I did, but he wouldn’t speak to me.” He almost mentioned that Charlotte had been with him, then decided not to. If they thought he’d murdered Darren, there was no reason to drag her into this.

Spencer studied him. “You’re a private detective?”

“Yes.”

“And, I see from your record, an ex-police officer.
